Notable quote of the day
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."--H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)
Since Mencken is just busting out with the mad knowledge, I'll give you a twofer:
"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed [and hence clamorous to be led to safety] by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”—Benjamin Franklin. And GET neither liberty nor safety. The current U.S. climate of freedom erosion has not made us any safer, only less free.

It seems especially appropriate these days, when “most” Americans are content to give up existing freedoms on the grounds that they didn’t need them anyway, and we have to make sacrifices in order to win the war on terror.
Guess what, America? Thinking you could give up freedom to curtail terrorism is why we lost the “war” before it started. Makes as much sense as thinking you can smash all the mirrors to cure ugliness. ;)
